Estimation and Rounding

We’ve been focusing on estimation and rounding during our maths lessons over the past few weeks. On Monday we enjoyed testing out our skills by estimating how far we could throw a paper aeroplane, how many skips we could do in 30 seconds and how many children would fit in a certain space. Despite some challenging and chilly conditions everyone had a good time and have developed some great estimating skills!

Elements of Art Introduction

This week we have started our new topic, Elements of Art. The children began by responding to a variety of different pieces of art. Thinking about how it made them feel, what they thought the pictures were of and how the artist created them.

The class then enjoyed the opportunity to create their own pieces of art. They could choose from a variety of art materials and create whatever they wanted! It was brilliant to see so many unique creations. Some people chose to use pencil or pen, others used paints, oil pastels and even collage.

We can’t wait to see what amazing art the children will be able to produce as we work our way through the various elements of art in the coming weeks.

Letter Writing

As part of our Scotland topic the children have been enjoying lots of the Katie Morag stories by Mairi Hedderwick. They wrote postcards at the start of the topic and more lengthy letters last week. The children enjoyed looking round the room at a variety of letters, picking out the key features before writing their own. Mrs Thomas and I have been so impressed with the children’s growing confidence at independent writing.

Leaflets

3B have been working on some persuasive leaflets this week to entice visitors to come to their islands. They worked really hard using persuasive phrases, lots of adjectives and came up with lots of free offers to put in their leaflets to give people extras reasons to visit! Today they got a surprise when the leaflets were set up as a tourist information stand in the classroom! The children loved sharing their work with one another as you can see from the smiles 😊

P3B reward time!

Today the children enjoyed their class ceilidh as a reward for their hard work in earning pom poms and filling their jar to the brim! The children enjoyed taking part in the 3 dances we have been learning in P.E on Wednesdays – the Virginia Reel, Canadian barn dance and the Gay Gordon’s. They had lots of fun in their tartan!

Amazing Islands

As we reach the end of our Scottish topic focusing on islands and boats the children in p3 have been working really hard to design their very own Scottish Islands. They had to decide on a name, location and landscape as well as thinking of the key landmarks and local amenities. They had to apply their knowledge from our recent money topic in maths to stick to a budget for what items they wanted to include.

Everyone’s work was of a brilliant standard and we enjoyed inviting Ms Gladstone and Ms Sellar in to have peek at what we’ve been up to!

Introducing Estimating

P3 have been learning about estimating and rounding to the nearest 10. We began this morning by estimating how many Cheerios would fit into our hand print. There were loads of really close guesses and some people even managed to guess the exact number. It was a bit of a challenge keeping count of how many we actually stuck down but we got there in the end!
